Introduction

The Indian Passport Authority has a provision for replacing damaged passports. This can be done online, but you must have the following documents with you:

Latest Damaged Passport

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you want to travel. If your passport is about to expire in less than 6 months, please renew it first as per our instructions here.
  • You must have enough blank pages in your passport for entry and exit stamps, otherwise, an additional visa might not be issued. If there isn’t enough space in your current passport, you can apply for an additional visa or change its validity period (but not both).
  • Your damaged Indian Passport must have a minimum validity period of 6 months after the date of issuance by the Ministry Of External Affairs For Entry Into India For NB persons holding passports issued by other countries where they are residing permanently will be treated as Resident Indians when they enter into India through any Port/Airport/Land Border Check Posts etc.
  • provided they fulfill all other conditions required under Section 9(1) & 9(2) of Foreigners Act 1946 i.e., prove their identity with their original citizenship documents like Birth Certificate or Voter ID card issued by Election Commission etc., and provide Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) if required along with Affidavit stating that he/she has been residing outside country since childhood till date

Old Passport

  • The passport should be valid. Your old passport must be valid at the time of applying for a new one.
  • The old passport should have at least two blank pages. If your old passport has fewer than two blank pages, please attach a photocopy of the last page showing your photo and signature to the application form.
  • The old passport must be issued by the government of India. It is not possible to replace an employer or educational institution-issued document with a fresh Indian Passport if it was issued outside India (e.g., Hong Kong SAR/China).

Self-attested copy of the damaged passport

  • Self-attested copy of the damaged passport.
  • Self-attested copy of the damaged passport means a copy of the passport which is attested by the applicant. The application form should be accompanied by a self-attested copy of the damaged passport.

It is important to note that if you are applying for both duplicate and renewal simultaneously for your Indian Passport, then you will need to apply in person at a PIO office with all required documents including your old passport (if available).
